I like using an 8 iron for all of my chipping around the green. The main reason is that for me an 8 iron requires the same swing speed as my putter. If I am on a really stupid tight lie and I hit it thin it still goes about the same distance as a putt.

The only problem is that I putt LH so I now have two 8 irons in the bag. However, when I go romping in the wood I always bring the LH 8 iron in case I am on the wrong side of the tree.

Hi Claude! 2 options here:
1-use the chipper with this technique mostly as the chipper is more upright like a putter;
2-ditch the chipper! Get a good sand wedge and lob wedge and learn all the shots in my videos and dvd through momentum and maximize you clubs and shots;
I would go with option #2 as it is much more efficient and fun! :) Shawn

Thanks Shawn.I Iove your videos. About your chipping lessons (all of them long and very short) would you apply them as per shown using a chipper? Thanks for comment. Claude.Brussels.

Great video shawn,
I have never seen this shot before, so many times have I not been able to feel the shorter shot and end up skulling it to the other side of the green due to stiff arms or hinging wrists. Thanks cant wait to practice this in my short game.

Aswell as the club shawn recommended, I would also use a 2 piece ball (pro V-1) when swinging through the ball bring the club head through and UP towrds the target line. anotherwords don’t allow the club head to come around the body UP the target line. accelerateing through is important and be ready for a 6-7 foot spinn back!!!! maybe more hahaha, good luck.

Putting grip is just zero out the angle (pad and shaft), and reduce the rolling rythum of the clubhead (as of the design of the lining shaft), hence less power, coz of less clubhead travelling. Anyway… all shot must have compression.
ZERO out the Transfer power (Accumulator #3)

great video, the bit at the end about using the toe of the club to lessen impact.

Thanks Shawn.
What kind of technique or swing gives the most spin. I see the pros take what appears to be a normal swing and ball backs up 20 ft. How do you impart the most spin. Move the ball back in your stance? Hit down on the ball? I’d love to see you do a video on this subject.

Get yourself a new Callaway wedge with the new MD grooves (Mac Daddy); unbelievable spin and bite on those suckers…:)

Great tips. A question I have is how to get max backspin on short/medium chips to stop the ball when you have little green to work with.

Great way to go about it Rosie! I am all for it! Bottom line is Golf is not always about the how; it is about the “How Many”!:)

Giday Shawn, I don’t have a lot of confidence in my chipping so when I’m off the green in thicker grass I use a hybrid club, very delicately of course. I seem to have more success with it than with my wedge or putter.

I agree. The close-up portion of the video was very helpful. Thanks Shawn!

You would be using momentum in your putting stroke to skip across the ground-turf through the ball; still using momentum to micro-compress the ball but you will barely feel it…Good question and thanks for your purchase! Shawn

Shawn, Love your videos and just ordered your DVD. One question on this clip. Using the putter grip and hitting off the toe, are we still compressing the ball or just sweeping it off the turf. Thanks

Simple enough!

Really appreciate the last 1:15 of the video. The close-up view and your elaboration on the heel-toe angle in relation to the ground totally makes this tip’s concept much easier to grasp.

This is what separates you from all the other instructors. Thank you Shawn.

p.s. In video 101, you were using a 60*, and here a 58*. Makes me wonder: what are your thoughts on the general rule of thumb of having 4* difference between wedges (52-56-60, 50-54-58, etc)?

My new Callaway “C Grind” 58 degree MD “Mac Daddy Grooves”; just fell in love with Roger Cleveland’s design of the sole for lob shots and the grooves are the sharpest I have seen to date! Thanks for the comment!
